Amaya

This is interactive installation consists of several ceramic pieces, representing the inside of funeral baskets. When the viewer passes by one of these pieces, it whispers the name of an indigenous person, as well as the date and place where they were murdered.

This series pays tribute to individuals from various indigenous peoples of Latin America who lost their lives defending their culture, language, land, heritage, knowledge and community. This installation brings the lives of these men and women into the present, taking them out of anonymity and reminding us that their struggle is still relevant today.

The productive process

Inspired from the imprinted ceramics technique from the Comechingones comunity from Argentna, a mold was made from the imprint of a totora basket. This allowed us to produce a small series of vases representing the inside of the totora basket. Once the pieces where baked, we smoked them to give them the black color through an indigenous process called "tiznado".
